Dating from 1870, this terraced house located in the architectural conservation area of St. Luke’s, Cork, is characterised by beautiful proportions and features. The clients sought to connect their living room to their south-facing garden. Our concept for the design of the project was to explore ideas about transition and threshold through changes in surface texture, materials and light as you move from inside to outside. The opening for the window in the living room was extended to make a patio door. Proportionally, the patio takes its dimensions from the living room, thus continuing the spatial harmony from interior to exterior. Careful thought has gone into the design of the patio to ensure the materials adopted to reflect the characteristics of the conservation area in which the house sits.
Téann an teach sraithe seo siar go 1870 agus é suite i limistéar caomhantais Naomh Lúc, Corcaí agus coibhneas álainn is gnéithe sainiúla aige. Theastaigh ó na cliaint a seomra suite a cheangail lena ngáirdín ag féachaint ó dheas.‘Sé ár gcioncheap don dearadh don tionscadal ná smaointe aistriú agus táirsigh a thaiscéal trí athraithe in uigneacht an dhromchla, na n-ábhair agus an tsolais agus tú ag bogadh ón taobh istigh go dtí an taobh amiugh. Rinneadh oscailt na fuinneoige sa seomra suite a mhéadú le doras paitío a chruthú. Go comhréireach, tógann an paitío a thomhais ón seomra suite, mar sin ag leanúint lena comhréir síochána spásúlach ón taobh istigh go dtí an taobh amuigh. Rinneadh diansmaoineamh ar dearadh an paitío le déanamh cinnte de gur roghnaíodh na hábhair a thugann frithchaitheamh don limístear caomhantais ina bhfuil an teach suite.
